Pre-Trip

So we started the year by booking a holiday to Orlando for Christmas 2009 and had no plans to do anything else but save for ‘said’ vacation which was going to be quite expensive as we are taking the in-laws with us and our eldest daughter which means 3 rooms for almost 3 weeks. Ouch. We revised this plan in April when it became obvious that the continuing credit crunch meant that our income was taking a hit and there was no way we could afford 3 rooms in the Swan Hotel. Changing the booking to a 6 bedroom house saved a good few thousand pounds which made me sleep a little easier but didn’t do anything to satisfy the nagging itch that I had been feeling for some time. Of course I knew what it was, knew it back in January when we booked for December but couldn’t say anything as we both knew it probably wouldn’t be practical or possible to have a summer holiday as well but then we didn’t know about Virgin Atlantic’s 25th birthday celebrations then and the offer of free flights for flying club members with sufficient airmiles. Actually, we only found out about them in May and a quick ‘what if…’ discussion later here we are booked to fly to Orlando on July 8th for nine days (because seven isn’t quite long enough).

To be honest Orlando wasn’t our first choice as we are heading back there for Christmas plus we are Disney veterans and you know what they say about familiarity. I’ve been feeling it a good while now, years according to Deb, and I think the three trips in one year when Charlotte was working as a Cast member in EPCOT was the final straw. Hark at me? During that year we got to stay at the Beach Club and Grand Floridian for christsakes. I don’t want to sound ungrateful as Disney has been a wonderful place for us over the years and the kids have grown up with it like it was their second home. We have been very lucky and had some amazing times but now I feel it is time for me to experience something else. Which is why this is going to be a non-Disney vacation… almost. I can’t go there in the heat of July and not spend a day in Typhoon Lagoon can I?

I figure there is so much to see and do outside of Disney to keep us occupied not forgetting the main reason for going is that we all need to R.E.L.A.X. In fact once we realised that flying to Los Angeles, Miami or Las Vegas wasn’t going to be possible the original idea was to head to Clearwater or St Petersburg for a beach holiday but after many head spinning hours researching on Trip Advisor and Expedia we became very despondent as every single hotel had more than their fair share of negative feedback and some horrendous stories of filthy rooms, bed mites, broken lifts, food poisoning, and so on. I wasn’t prepared to take a chance and have it ruin our time as there is no way I could chill in that kind of environment. So we headed back to familiar territory and found a really great deal at the Radisson which is near the Crossroads, an area that we know very well. We haven’t stayed at the Radisson before but it is currently rated #1 on Trip Advisor and the rooms look new and clean.  I can’t wait.

With 33 days to go, or something like that, we are now in the advanced planning stages and have decided to use the Twilight check-in service as I find it less stressful than queing on the morning of the flight. We won’t be staying at a hotel in or around Gatwick though, instead we’ll drive home (only an hour) and then head back in the morning. That way we can have breakfast at home and leave later. I like the idea of that and fingers crossed the M25 will be nice and clear or at least running smoothly on the 8th.

That’s it for now but I will be twittering during the holiday and may also update you on our plans before we go. See you all later.
